SUMMARY:Public Invited to National Fossil Day Activities
DESCRIPTION:BISMARCK- The North Dakota Geological Survey (NDGS) and State Historical Society of North Dakota will host the sixth annual National Fossil Day on Wednesday\, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck. The public is encouraged to bring rocks and fossils to be inspected by NDGS paleontological and geological staff between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Previous fossil days have brought hundreds of visitors to have their ancient finds identified. Paleontologists Becky Barnes and Jeff Person will present a demonstration of Prehistoric Fishing at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Russell Reid Auditorium. Barnes says fossils are a great way to understand the history of life\, past climates\, and ancient landscapes- but also a great way to foster a greater sense of discovery. She says this event is great for young explorers interested in learning about prehistoric life. "Just for fun\, kids are encouraged to come to the event dressed in Halloween costumes to create craft projects. This event is a great way for anyone to see what time travel is really about. You go back in time when you hold a fossil." Kids are also encouraged to participate in an art contest\, with winners announced on National Fossil Day. Entries for the contest must be received by October 7th. Information about the art contest and all the National Fossil day activities can be found at the NDGS website at: https://www.dmr.nd.gov/ndfossil/fossil_day/FossilDayActivities.asp
