This is a Full-time position involving a combination of general supervision of the Circulation staff, direct assistant to the public at the Circulation Desk, and overall supervision of the Circulation Department in the absence of the Head of Circulation Services. This position is a 40-hour work week, which includes every fourth weekend.
The person in this position greets patrons, listens to and understands a patron’s request, and accurately provides assistance or, if necessary, refers to the appropriate person or department face to face or on the telephone. The Circulation Manager checks items out to patrons, including items on hold and interlibrary loans and checks in materials and handles items on hold, interlibrary loans, damaged materials, and items belonging to other libraries according to established procedures, accepts payments for fines and fees and makes change quickly and accurately. This person performs basic financial record keeping both on a computer and on paper, assists with daily reconciliation of Circulation and Information Desk cash drawers and assists in training and providing guidance for Volunteers, Pages, and Circulation Associates.
The Circulation Manager provides guidance for circulation staff in difficult or complicated transactions and in interpreting policies and procedures to staff and the public and handles unresolved patron issues when needed, clearly communicates library policies and procedures to the public as necessary. They assist the Head of Circulation Services in hiring and training circulation staff, delegates training responsibilities to other circulation staff as appropriate, assists with developing and facilitating library programs in areas of interest/expertise as time allows, participates in Professional Development and Leadership monthly meetings, and performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required.
Bachelor’s Degree and current computer and word processing skills required. Two or more years of public or academic library experience preferred. Two or more years of supervisory experience preferred.
Must have the ability to assist patrons in a friendly, confident and self-assured manner, remaining calm in busy and/or difficult situations.
Must be able to compose written materials and maintain files in an organized manner.
Must have demonstrated proficiency utilizing computer hardware and software. Must be able to operate other library technology and equipment.
Must be able to resolve complaints through careful negotiation, knowing when to seek assistance from the Head of Circulation Services.
Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
Must be able to adapt to flexible scheduling, usually one evening per week and one weekend per month.
Must be able to relate to and work as a team player with the other members of the Circulation Department and general Library staff.
Must adhere to the Library’s Dress Code Policy and maintain proper personal hygiene.
