Free Learning Series, “Little Kids, Big World,” Featured at North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum
Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to a free interactive learning series, “Little Kids, Big World,” on Mondays at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. These fun, hands-on 30-minute programs will introduce children to North Dakota’s fascinating history—from dinosaurs through today’s ongoing story. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The series begins on Sept. 11, with "Dinosaur Explore" where participants will walk, crawl, and race as they compare how animals, including dinosaurs, move. Upcoming programs in the series include: “Drawing History” on Sept. 18 which will teach the children how to record the story of their life, family, or community, as the Plains Indians did with a Winter Count; “Frozen in North Dakota” on Sept. 25 where the participants are encouraged to bring their own toys and clothes inspired by the Disney movie “Frozen” to see if and how they relate to items that are on display in the museum; and “Cotton to Cloth” on October 2 when children can see the transformation of raw materials like cotton and wool to finished textiles with live demonstrations of spinning, knitting, and weaving. The programs will be led by Stephanie Schick, a gallery guide at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. Schick is a graduate of Northern Arizona University who previously worked as an educator at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa. Schick, who has a passion for history, science, and education, loves to travel and has taught in schools in Kenya and Egypt. Participants are asked to meet at the east entrance information desk at the ND Heritage Center and State Museum. For more information, contact Erik Holland, 701.328.2792.
