“Home Movies Hit the Road” at North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum
A free program, “Home Movies Hit the Road,” will be Aug. 21 from 7-8 p.m. at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck. The program will focus on the tradition of recording travel experiences, particularly road trips. Speakers will explore circumstances that led to a rise in driving-based vacations and the image recording technology during this period of time. Homemade movies from past decades will be screened, accompanied by live narrators telling stories behind the films and videos. Audiences are encouraged to share their road trip memories along the way. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with experts available to answer questions about Al Larvick Conservation Fund (ALCF) home movie grants or how to care for home movie collections. Register at http://www.allarvickfund.eventbrite.com. This program is one of three events in celebration of home movies hosted by the ALCF, the State Historical Society of North Dakota, Barnes County Historical Society, and the North Dakota State University Archives, in partnership with local experts and historians. Additional programs are Aug. 22 from 7-8 p.m. at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum, Valley City, and Aug. 23 from 7-8 p.m. at the Fargo Public Library, downtown Fargo (3rd St. N. location). The State Historical Society of North Dakota collects, digitizes, and preserves home movies if they are believed to be of historic value. For more information, visit history.nd.gov/archives. Find a calendar of additional upcoming events at statemuseum.nd.gov. ALCF is inspired by Al Larvick, a man devoted to documenting everyday life activities. The fund’s mission is to preserve historical and cultural heritage through conversation, education, and public accessibility of American home and amateur recordings created prior to 1990. ALCF’s North Dakota sponsor is The MediaPreserve. For more information about ALCF, visit www.allarvickfund.org.
